World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD)
June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) which is an international day to voice opposition to the abuse of older people.
WEAAD is a way for the community to come together to increase awareness of elder abuse and learn more about how to prevent it.
Elder abuse is any act—or lack of appropriate action— within a relationship of trust which results in harm to an older person. It can be emotional, psychological, financial, physical or sexual abuse, or neglect.
The official colour of WEAAD is purple which represents wisdom, dignity, independence and creativity.

WEAAD Resources
The 2025 WEAAD toolkit has been created as a go to for information and links to support for anyone witnessing or experiencing elder abuse in Queensland. You can download it and other WEAAD resources below.
It has been developed through partnership between many key agencies working to support victims, increase awareness within communities and implement prevention and intervention strategies around the state.

Event Calendar
WEAAD 2025 brings individuals and communities throughout Queensland together to show their support by hosting and attending a wide range of activities.
These events take place over a month and provide the opportunity to learn about Elder Abuse, its impact and older people’s human rights.

Unite for Action: Queensland Elder Abuse Prevention Forum
When: 9am to 11am
Where: Brisbane Room Brisbane City Hall
Keynote address by Cybele Koening, CEO, Caxton Legal Centre and a panel discussion by leaders in Elder Abuse prevention on building collaboration in place-based services and responses.

Stir a Cuppa for Seniors – Mackay
When: 9am to 12pm
Where: Shamrock Hotel, Mackay
Stir a Cuppa for Seniors is a free morning tea in Mackay on 20 June 2025. The purple-themed morning will include morning tea, guest speakers, and activities.

Unite for Action: Queensland Elder Abuse Prevention Webinar
When: 12pm to 1pm
Where: Online via Zoom webinar link – coming soon
Who: Social Isolation Prevention workers and volunteers
This webinar aims to provide social isolation prevention workers and volunteers with the information and tools they need to identify elder abuse and support efforts to prevent it in their communities.
Join a panel discussion which will define elder abuse types, identify signs and advise of organisations who can help with responses and resources as well as tips on how to start a conversation.

Shining a Light on Elder Abuse
A number of local councils are showing their support by lighting a number of buildings, bridges and landmarks purple.

This year Brisbane City Council assets being lit up include Kangaroo Point Bridge, Reddacliff Place, the Story and Victoria Bridges.
