Making History, Not Staying a Mystery

Bob Brumell

After a career spanning two decades in the Australian Vocational Education and Training sector, Bob Brummell has never been one to sit still. Even in retirement, his commitment to community connection, learning, and helping others continues to shine—qualities that led him to become a Volunteer Energy4Seniors Champion.

A Personal Journey that Sparked a Purpose

Three years into retirement, Bob and his family relocated from the Sunshine Coast to southern Logan City. Like many older Queenslanders navigating change, he had to re-establish essential services, including electricity in his new home. The process opened his eyes to the real cost pressures and information gaps facing seniors today.

“When I moved, I immediately related to all the aspects of power and energy that I had to sort out for myself,” Bob shared. “The Energy4Seniors program highlighted just how much time, effort and cost is involved—and how important it is to make informed choices.”

With strong presentation skills and a passion for sharing knowledge, Bob knew he could use his lived experience to support others.

Building Stronger Communities Through Shared Knowledge

Bob believes that meaningful change happens at the community level—neighbours helping neighbours, people offering their time and skills, and everyone contributing in their own way.

“I honestly believe that it takes a community to shape a community,” he said. “I’m just doing my bit.”

To Bob, the benefits of Council on the Ageing Queensland’s Energy4Seniors program extend far beyond saving money—though that’s important too. He sees the program as a pathway to connection, empowerment and resilience.

“There’s real satisfaction in helping people communicate, connect and benefit. We can build great intrinsic value, especially for the seniors in our community.”

Those “Ah-Ha!” Moments That Make It All Worthwhile

While still early in his journey as a Champion, Bob enjoys the small wins—and the lightbulb moments.

“We sometimes see a few FOBO moments, ‘flash of the blinding obvious.’ Someone will hear something and say, ‘Ah-ha! Now I get it and I know what I’m going to do!’ Those moments show the impact.”

Leaving a Legacy

Bob is an avid family history researcher, and one quote has become a guiding principle in his volunteer work:

“Make history or stay a mystery.”

For Bob, being a Volunteer Energy 4 Seniors Champion is a way of leaving a positive mark—helping others, strengthening community connections, and offering his time to create something of greater value.
