Port Douglas Community Service Network is a community-focused organisation that supports older people and the wider community through social connection programs, wellbeing activities, practical support services and opportunities to build meaningful relationships.
By creating welcoming spaces where people can connect, participate and support one another, the network helps reduce social isolation, strengthen community belonging and support people to age well within their local community.
Stories from the Volunteers
Bruce
At 84 years of age, Bruce Ferguson is a remarkable example of active and healthy ageing within the Douglas community. Since late 2022, Bruce has personally collected and recycled more than 320,000 bottles and cans, raising over $32,000 for the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre. These funds have helped support community programs, food relief initiatives, and much-needed facility improvements.
Bruce spends countless hours each day collecting containers, volunteering, and supporting local initiatives, demonstrating the incredible impact older volunteers can have within their communities.Â
He embodies the spirit of healthy ageing through purpose, physical activity, social connection, and ongoing community contribution. Alongside his container collection efforts, Bruce continues to volunteer regularly and assist with community activities, inspiring people of all ages with his generosity, humour, and determination.
Bruce’s story highlights the important role volunteers play in strengthening community connections and shows that ageing can continue to be filled with purpose, contribution, and meaningful impact. His passion has even inspired others to become involved. Bruce has encouraged family members to assist with collecting bottles and cans and has partnered with local businesses who now save containers for him. His dedication became so well known that he even modified his car to fit as many cans and bottles as possible while transporting them to the recycling centre in Mossman. Eventually, the volume became so significant that the recycling centre now collects directly from Bruce’s home.
Bruce has a long history of contributing to the Douglas community. In earlier years, he introduced the region’s first taxi service, followed by the first limousine service. In retirement, he has continued giving back through his volunteer work and fundraising efforts for the community.
The impact of Bruce’s contributions can be seen throughout the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre. Funds raised through his recycling efforts have helped renovate and improve the workshop by insulating and lining the shed to create a more comfortable and safe working environment. Bruce also funded a new clothing donation bin when the previous one rusted and began leaking, provided waterproof shade sails for the front gathering area used by community members each week, and when parents attending our HUB program were getting wet entering the building, Bruce once again stepped in and funded another waterproof sail. These are only a few examples among the many ways Bruce has quietly and generously supported the Centre and the wider community.
Bruce is a true community champion whose actions continue to make a lasting difference to the lives of others. His ongoing commitment, generosity, and community spirit are an inspiration and a powerful reminder that volunteering and giving back have no age limit. Bruce demonstrates what healthy ageing can look like through staying active, connected, and purposeful within his community.
His dedication shows that maintaining meaningful roles, social engagement, physical activity, and a sense of contribution can have a positive impact not only on individual wellbeing, but also on the strength and resilience of the wider community.
